Trader Joe’s is expanding into South Philadelphia for the first time with a planned store along Columbus Boulevard.

The grocery chain will anchor a new shopping center at 1505-25 South Columbus Boulevard in Pennsport. The property sits near the intersection of Columbus Boulevard and Dickinson Street.

The new store would become Trader Joe’s third Philadelphia location. Currently, the grocer operates stores on Arch Street and Market Street in Center City.

However, the Pennsport location would significantly expand the retailer’s reach across Philadelphia. Nearby neighborhoods include Queen Village, Whitman, Dickinson Narrows, and other waterfront communities.

Additionally, the site sits within an established South Philadelphia retail corridor. Several major grocery and national retailers already operate nearby.

A Giant supermarket sits across from the proposed location. Meanwhile, Acme, Target, and Walmart operate within approximately half a mile.

That concentration of retailers has established Columbus Boulevard as a major shopping destination. Trader Joe’s could further strengthen the corridor’s appeal to surrounding residents.

The lease also comes amid continued investment along Philadelphia’s Delaware River waterfront. Retail, residential, and mixed-use developments have steadily transformed the area in recent years.

Furthermore, grocery-anchored developments continue attracting interest as consumers prioritize convenient access to everyday goods and services.

Trader Joe’s arrival adds another nationally recognized retailer to the evolving South Philadelphia waterfront. It also marks a significant expansion beyond the company’s longtime Center City footprint.
