Trader Joe’s is expanding its Philadelphia footprint with a new South Philadelphia location. The grocery retailer has signed a lease to anchor a planned shopping center along Columbus Boulevard.
The proposed development is located between Dickinson and Tasker streets on the Delaware River waterfront. Once completed, the store will become Trader Joe’s third location in Philadelphia.
Current Philadelphia stores operate near the Pennsylvania Convention Center and in the Market Street business district. As a result, the new location will strengthen the company’s presence across the city.
The shopping center will be developed on approximately four acres at 1505-25 South Columbus Boulevard. Earlier this year, New York-based Ocean Block Capital acquired the property for $7.5 million.
Previously, the site was owned by Philadelphia developer Bart Blatstein. For several years, the property had been planned for future retail development.
The addition of Trader Joe’s represents a significant milestone for the project. Grocery anchors often attract complementary retailers while increasing customer traffic throughout a shopping center.
Meanwhile, investment activity continues along the Delaware River waterfront. New residential, retail, and mixed-use developments are reshaping the corridor and expanding neighborhood amenities.
If completed as planned, the project will introduce another nationally recognized retailer to South Philadelphia while supporting continued commercial growth along Columbus Boulevard.
